EGN builds green Blockchain computing power in Oman, as MoonWalk goes quiet

Months after Chinese clean energy enterprise Central New Energy Holding Group announced an MoU with international power infrastructure company EGN Ltd for joint cooperation in the investment and development of solar energy projects and potentially even local photovoltaic module production in the Sultanate of Oman, EGN has showcased its 200 MW green project in Salalah Oman, stating it is building a regional computing power and blockchain center.

As per the LinkedIn post EGN is currently constructing the Salalah 200 MW project in Oman to support the high quality development of the digital economy industry.

EGN Ltd, a clean energy-focused power infrastructure company incorporated in the Cayman Islands, is principally engaged in the operation of large-scale data centers worldwide, notably across the US, Latin America and Asia. The company also has a presence in Oman, which is home to an expanding cluster of traditional data centers and data mining centers.

Founded in 2009 as a power infrastructure company, EGN Limited evolved from energy engineering into the frontier of blockchain and crypto infrastructure by 2016. Recognizing the digital economy’s demand for scalable, high-efficiency data centers, they strategically invested in mining hardware, proprietary supply chains, and global operations.

EGN now has over 10 industrial-grade data centers across the U.S., Latin America, and Asia. In 2024, the company passed 800MW of cumulative construction with live sites across USA, Paraguay, Ethiopia, Oman ,and Russia.

Is ENG replacing Exahertz Project in Salalah

Back in 2023, as part of the strategy to build crypto mining datacentres in Oman, the first phase of Asyad Group crypto mining center was launched in the Free zone in Salalah which was to be built and managed by Exahertz a subsidiary of Afaq Advance Technologies firm. The ceremony included the inauguration of a pilot facility for the first phase of the project on the center for data processing and hosting of cryptocurrency mining. During the event the second phase of the project was also launched.

At the time Said Hamoud Al Ma’awali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, noted that the inauguration of the first phase of the project reflects the ministry’s keenness on promoting digital investment and localizing advanced technologies. He added that the company in charge of the project is expected to achieve a quarter of envisaged volume of production before the end of 2023.

The Exahertz Blockchain Data Centre, with an investment value of $348 million was supposed to cover 312,000 square meters. Sam Ferdos, CEO of MoonWalk Systems and Strategic Partners of Exahertz noted that wider network of blockchain based data center were planned in Oman, starting with the pilot in Salalah.

Ferdos stated to Observer media at the time, “The pilot is already online with 11 megawatts of power and over 2,000 machines. By October 2023, capacity will be ramped up to have up to 15,000 machines online, with development fast-tracked to cover three locations in Salalah and one in Al Jabal Al Akhdar in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate.”

Almost three years later, the Exahertz website for Oman is still under construction, and its last social media post was in 2023. Even MoonWalk’s last social media post was in January of 2025, but did not mention Oman.

UAE based MoonWalk, in a December 2024 X post, noted that the first phase of their 200MW Salalah free zone data hosting and mining center was already up and running, with the second phase soon to be launched. They noted “Our eyes are set on 2025 to expand globally and lead the way in sustainable energy solutions, cutting-edge mining technologies, and transformative digital finance. The future is bright, and we’re just getting started.”

On MoonWalk’s website, it showcases 10 MW powered datacenter in Jebel Akhdar Oman with a Hashrate of 1EH/s, and one in Salalah Oman, with 100 MW powered datacenter with a hashrate of 4EH/s. This is far from the 200 MW they had promised to have up and running.

So is the entrance of EGN a replacement for MoonWalk and Exahertz, or a move into greener energy based datacenters?
